Boldy James, a Detroit rapper, is back with his second album since suffering serious injuries in a car accident in January. The brand-new EP, which goes by the name Prisoner of Circumstance, has seven tracks that capture his signature flow and are produced by Chan Hays, a friend and collaborator. James’ publicist announced in January that he had undergone “extensive surgery” before reaching a stable condition after breaking a vertebrae in his neck and sustaining other orthopedic injuries in a Detroit two-car accident. But just a few days later, the 40-year-old rapper released Indian Jones, an album he co-wrote with producer RichGains. Now, with Prisoner of Circumstance, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

The sound that James and the Griselda group have become known for is featured on the new EP. A beautiful blend of style, genre, and communicative lyricism is created when soulful samples, vinyl scratches, and a plethora of melodic hooks are combined with insightful and intentional delivery. Prisoner of Circumstance comes before two other James releases: a project with Harry Fraud that hasn’t been named yet, and Drug Dilla, a long-awaited record with unheard J Dilla production. No delivery dates are out yet, however the two undertakings are “forthcoming,” as per an official statement.

James announced his first tour dates since his car accident in May. The tour will take James across the United States, beginning this weekend in Detroit, and ending in August in Europe for a few shows.
