Video: Ella Mai – Naked

Since signing with DJ Mustard’s 10 Summers imprint, it would appear that singer-songwriter Ella Mai has been quite productive in the music industry. In 2017, the artist located in the United Kingdom served as the opening act for Kehlani’s “Sweet Sexy Savage” tour before closing out the year with a tour of her own that was completely sold out. Now, on the occasion of the second anniversary of the release of her EP Time, Ella Mai has released a socially conscious music video for her most recent track, “Naked.”

The director of this music video, Keoni Marcelo, decided to portray Ella in a manner that is congruent with the message conveyed by her hit. Using lyrics such as “Somebody who loves me naked / someone who never asks for love / but knows how to take it / are you that somebody,” Ella Mai utilises the song “Naked” to illustrate how beauty can be a matter of personal preference. And with the images of the video being matched with these topics, it is apparent that the singer, who is half-Jamaican and half-Irish, believes that the struggle to define the bounds of beauty standards is a struggle that affects everyone.
