This year has been a very busy one for Kaytranada, and that’s for a very good reason. The Montreal producer uploaded a mixtape on Soundcloud named 0.001% that lasted for 87 minutes just seven days ago (on September 21). Taking inspiration from his debut album 99.9%, he had a good time experimenting with different sounds on that mix.
The winner of the Polaris Music Prize has just released the music video for his song “You’re The One,” which features Syd Tha Kid. The video was published on September 27.
Kaytranada Debuts 87 Minute Mix: ‘0.001%’
The music video appears to be influenced by the decade of the 1990s, as it depicts three women getting ready for a night out while making references to Martin and displaying a vibrant setting that you wouldn’t see nowadays. The director of the short clip, Shomi Patwary, stated in a press release that the look of black sitcoms from the early 1990s, ranging from Martin to Living Single to UPN sitcoms, affected the stylistic choices that were made for the clip. The story of Coming to America was the original inspiration for the African prince idea.
